Location: Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Campsite: Cold Creek Valley
Camping can be a wonderful way to experience the great outdoors, but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. That's exactly what happened when we went camping at Cold Creek Valley Campground in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Our original plan was to fish on the Kings River, but with all the rain Arkansas had received over the previous days, it was clearly not an option once we saw the river—it was a thick chocolate milk. So fly fishing the river will have to wait for the next time we go to Cold Creek Valley Campground (because there will be a next time!).
When we arrived at the campground, it was gorgeous outside. We quickly set up our Thule rooftop tent and explored the property. This property features trails, a spring-fed creek, a small pond, a composting toilet, platforms for tents, fire pits, and picnic tables. All three sites are beautiful! We stayed at site #2, which sits next to the spring-fed creek.
We hiked one of the trails and spent some time soaking in the chilly creek. It was awesome! I felt like a kid again exploring this campsite and property.
That night, we cooked a delicious Dutch oven-ish pizza on the Eureka stove. HA! You may be wondering how we did that. And to be honest, it was a challenge. We showed up with all the items to make a Dutch oven pizza with our Dutch oven and quickly discovered that I didn't bring all the equipment necessary to do that! So we improvised. Ross was quick on his feet and used a dirty t-shirt for the holder, a pan to transport hot coals from the fire, and the stovetop to heat the bottom. It was a great pizza!
A rain and lightning storm came into camp around midnight. We were so thankful that Mason, the owner, had left a tarp we fashioned as a wind barrier for our Aspen dog! It was a great spot to ride out the storm!
The next morning, we packed up camp and got ready to explore Eureka Springs. Since fishing wasn't an option, I voted that we go on a hike. I had seen Black Bass Lake on a map and wanted to explore the trails there. Eureka Springs has a great system of parks and trails that the city maintains. This was a highlight of the town!
On our way back home, we reflected on the stay and decided this was one of our favorite camping spots we've been to in the state. Between the gorgeous property, unique area, and fantastic amenities, this spot is one you can't miss.
Despite the rain, our camping trip turned out to be a memorable adventure. We learned that sometimes, it's the unexpected challenges that make a trip truly unforgettable. Cold Creek Valley Campground is a beautiful spot, rain or shine.
