While the state is widely known for its world-class trout fishing, smallmouth bass are plentiful and a wild native species. These fish are known for their tenacity and fighting spirit, which make them a favorite for fly fishing enthusiasts across the state.

In Arkansas, smallmouth bass are most active during spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. During the summer months, smallmouth bass tend to move to deeper waters where they are harder to catch.
3. Choose the Right Fly
When fly fishing for smallmouth bass, choosing the right fly is essential. Smallmouth bass are known for their aggressive nature, so a brightly colored and flashy fly is often the best choice. Some popular fly patterns for smallmouth bass include Clouser Minnows, Woolly Buggers, and Poppers.
4. Use the Right Gear
To successfully fly fish for smallmouth bass, having the right gear is important. A 9-foot 5 or 6-weight rod with a weight-forward floating line is a good choice for smallmouth bass. You'll also need a leader that is at least 9 feet long and a tippet that is 4-6 pounds. But don't let the gear stop you. You can also run to Walmart, pick up a fly rod for $35, and start there! Bring a good pair of wading boots and a wading staff to help you navigate the rocky river bottoms. My favorite summer gear is my Chacos, TFO rod, and Orvis reel. It just feels right!
5. Practice Catch and Release
Smallmouth bass are a popular catch, but it's important to practice catch and release to ensure the sustainability of the fish population. Be sure to handle the fish gently and release them back into the water as quickly as possible. Some areas require you to catch and release, so please check regulations before heading out to your fishing spot.
